Excerpt from The Prologue: "During the decade of the 1930s, the United States and the rest of the world found themselves in a state of economic depression. Following the "crash" of the stock market in October 1929, the United States government took a number of ill-advised actions, such as increasing the tariffs, which only made the situation worse. Their actions were intended to protect the nation's workers and businesses, however what they did further depressed international trade and the economic conditions worsened. Not unlike the rest of the country, Fenton experienced the effects of the "Great Depression." With the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932, the "New Deal" began. The "New Deal" was Roosevelt's program to stimulate the economy by providing jobs for the people and financial assistance to State and local governments and businesses, primarily through massive government spending programs ..." |
