Eagle Point on Lake Fenton on the 4th of July 2008

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Lake Fenton is the premier lake in Fenton, Michigan. It’s open to the public with a pay-to-launch public access facility. A handful of years ago, due to commercial development, a popular area of the lake for people to “tie up” and have a good time that went by the nickname “Pig Beach” was closed down. Now it appears that the peninsula on the south end of the lake by the nickname of “Eagle Point” is the new hot hang out spot.

In 2007, FentonSays captured a view of a fairly busy weekend out at Eagle Point. One reader suggested we take another look at it on the 4th of July. We did exactly that (see, we read what our readers have to say, and we respond!).

NOTE: The 2007 FentonSays.com video collection is now available for purchase online! The DVD has much sharper quality of video than can be seen on YouTube or on our site. Get your commemorative thirty-five video segments in the first ever video of its kind.

Happy Thanksgiving from Fenton, Michigan

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

Many messages are viewed this time of year with images of Pilgrims, turkeys, and pumpkins. Radio and airwaves resonate this time of year with advertising specials. Rather than bore you with yet another historical treatise on the roots of our unique American tradition, or pass along one more complaint on seasonal commercialism, I want to pass along a personal observation:

What a wonderful country we live in!

Despite political debate, we enjoy a freedom unmatched anywhere or anytime in the history of mankind. The prairies grow enough wheat to help feed the hungry in other less-fortunate lands. The economic output of some American States surpasses the gross national product of some countries. This is not bragging. Rather, it is a realistic assessment of the leadership role afforded America. Thus it behooves you and me to be . . thankful.

This Thanksgiving—as you eat turkey and pumpkin, remember there are others less fortunate. Please be thankful for all the blessings in your life. Happy Thanksgiving from Fenton, Michigan!

Fenton Gets Into The Spirit of Halloween with a Scarecrow Contest

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

Halloween is reported as being the second most decorated holiday (next to Christmas) in the United States. Fenton, Michigan is no different. The Chamber of Commerce coordinated about forty local businesses to participate in a trick-or-treat session starting at 1:00 PM on Halloween this year. Many of the businesses also participated in a Scarecrow Contest where the local businesses were invited to create a scarecrow that tied in with their particular business.

So on Halloween Day, we drove through much of town looking for these novel scarecrows. And we found a number of them. By no means are we claiming to have found each and every one of them, so to the extent that we missed some, we know and didn’t mean it as a slight. We did call the Chamber of Commerce to find out if any winners had been chosen, and as of Halloween Day none had been selected.

If we missed any of the Scarecrow Contest participants, please feel free to mention this in the comment section or in our discussion forums. We did capture the scarecrows from Sagebrush Cantina, the Fenton United Methodist Church, Chase Bank, Jet’s Pizza, Fenton Glass, Kimberly Kay Furniture, Fenton Home Furnishings and Harris Financial Corporation.

2007 Fenton Freedom Festival Parade

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

The reception at the Fenton Hotel on July 3rd to honor the Durant Family as the 2007 Fenton Freedom Festival Grand Marshals had a very nice turn out. There were plenty of delicious hors d’oeuvres provided free of charge to the public by the Fenton Hotel. The presentations, declarations and anecdotal Durant family stories highlighted the evening. Jan Rynearson honored and remembered Mary Alice Durant, who passed away in 2006. Pat Lockwood said that this was one of the most enjoyable Fenton Freedom Festival Receptions to date.

Rain washed the early morning in Fenton, Michigan on the 4th of July this year. A fine mist of occasional rain kept the crowds cool in the mild temperatures during the parade. The Hall family of Hall Chrysler in Fenton provided the silver convertible Seabring as the Grand Marshals’ car. Driving the Grand Marshals, Ray Durant, Dave Durant and Todd Durant, is Bob Harris who is one of Uncle Ray’s real life nephews.

For as bad as the weather forecast was for Fenton on the 4th of July, the day turned out to be quite nice. Rain didn’t ruin the parade, and by the late afternoon the sun was seen peaking out over Lake Fenton. Temperatures warmed up into the high 70’s, possibly low 80’s, before the firework display at Silver Lake Park later that night.

Fenton Freedom Festival Fireworks

Wednesday, July 4th, 2007

Lots of FentonSays.com readers are looking for additional information on tonight’s firework display. This year the fireworks will originate from within Silver Lake Park. There will be NO parking allowed within the park, nor along the road outside of the park. In this article, Pat Lockwood, chairwoman of the Freedom Festival since its inception, is attributed as saying that there is plenty of public parking available around the stores across from Silver Lake Park.

Anyone with pictures of the event that they would like to share with the local community, please email them to us at admin@fentonsays.com. Have a safe and enjoyable Independence Day celebration!

Happy Father’s Day, Fenton!

Sunday, June 17th, 2007

Father’s Day is a primarily secular holiday inaugurated in the early 20th century to complement Mother’s Day in celebrating fatherhood and parenting by males, and to honour and commemorate fathers and forefathers. Father’s Day is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide, and typically involves gift-giving to fathers and family-oriented activities.

In the United States, the first modern Father’s Day celebration was held on July 5, 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia. It was first celebrated as a church service at Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, now known as Central United Methodist Church. Grace Golden Clayton, who is believed to have suggested the service to the pastor, is believed to have been inspired to celebrate fathers after the deadly mine explosion in nearby Monongah the prior December. This explosion killed 361 men, many of them fathers and recent immigrants to the United States from Italy. Another possible inspiration for the service was Mother’s Day, which was recently celebrated for the first time in Grafton, West Virginia, a town about 15 miles away.

Another driving force behind the establishment of the celebration of Father’s Day was Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd, born in Creston, Washington. Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, as a single parent raised his six children in Spokane, Washington. She was inspired by Anna Jarvis’s efforts to establish Mother’s Day. Although she initially suggested June 5, the anniversary of her father’s death, she did not provide the organizers with enough time to make arrangements, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June. The first June Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane.

Unofficial support from such figures as William Jennings Bryan was immediate and widespread. President Woodrow Wilson was personally feted by his family in 1916. President Calvin Coolidge recommended it as a national holiday in 1924. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson made Father’s Day a holiday to be celebrated on the third Sunday of June. The holiday was not officially recognized until 1972, during the presidency of Richard Nixon.

In recent years, retailers have adapted to the holiday by selling male-oriented gifts such as electronics and tools. Schools and other children’s programs commonly have activities to make Father’s Day gifts.

Happy Father’s Day to all the Fathers in Fenton, Michigan!
