36th Annual Applefest - September 18th-21st, 2008
Thursday, September 18th, 2008What began as a small parish ethnic festival 36 years ago has evolved into the area’s largest autumn festival. Held on the grounds of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Fenton, MI, the St. John Applefest has become a community event that draws families from Fenton, Linden, Holly, and all over the tri-county area. As the largest parish festival in the Diocese of Lansing, Applefest provides friendship, festivities, food, and – most of all – fun for people of all ages.

Uncle Ray’s Dairyland in Fenton Has Ice Cream Before Spring!!
Sunday, March 2nd, 2008
Anyone who has been to Fenton, Michigan knows that the premier family destination is Uncle Ray’s Dairyland. It’s a micro-creamery chock full of tasty homemade ice cream treats. Uncle Ray’s recently put some major funding into an outdoor renovation that’ll extend Fentonite’s outdoor ice cream eating season by a couple of months. Uncle Ray’s Dairyland reopened on Valentine’s Day, probably because people love it so much.

Treasure Hunt at Attic Treasures Tent at St. John’s Applefest
Thursday, September 13th, 2007
One of the most popular attractions at the Saint John Applefest is the Attic Treasures Tent. Think of it as a huge, consolidated subdivision garage sale where one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. There are some serious deals to be had, and the word is getting out.
When do you find the best of the best deals? Right at the very beginning before the items have had a chance to be combed over, of course. And here is where the “Treasure Hunt” comes in … For a $3 entry fee, you can get into the tent today (Thursday, September 13th) before the general public! “We always have a large waiting line before the festival opens at 3PM, so we decided this would be a good way to get people into the tent early and make a little more money (for the church),” said Kathy Williams, chair of this event.
FentonSays.com has some conflicting information on when this early bird special on the Attic Treasures Tent. The Tri-County Times, in an article in the September 9th edition, states that the “Treasure Hunt” is from 1PM until 3PM. However, the St. John’s Applefest website states that the early bird period is only an hour between 2PM and 3PM. And you readers know that FentonSays is about blogging the rumors instead of always checking the facts. But there you have it. We might suggest showing up at 1PM to be safe, and if the tent flaps don’t open until 2PM you can always fill that time with an apple pie or carnival games.
St. John’s Applefest — Sept. 13-16

Applefest History
By Jan Rynearson, Features Editor, Tri-County Times
St. John Applefest 2007, the 35th annual, promises to be bigger and better than the past 34.
Although it had small beginnings, the festival has grown into one of the largest and most profitable events at any one parish in the entire Diocese of Lansing.
From September 13-16, 2007, the parish grounds will be crowded with activities to delight people of all ages.
It begins Thursday afternoon with the opening of the midway rides and events at 3pm. The annual opening prayer is read before everything opens.
More than a parish fundraiser, the Applefest is regarded as Fenton’s fall festival (the Fenton Freedom Festival is the city’s summer Fourth of July celebration).
The event draws approximately 100,000 people and those of all faiths look forward to attending. Former Fentonites, who have relocated across the state and out-of-state, often return for the event.

Amanda and Ladder Boy at the Michigan Renaissance Festival
Wednesday, September 5th, 2007Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Hear Ye!
The Michigan Renaissance Festival is still open on weekends throughout the month of September. Located in neighboring Holly, Michigan, the Michigan Renaissance Festival offers a unique form of entertainment. Shops and plays galore, but don’t forget the games!
One sinisterly difficult challenge is the Jacob’s Ladder. Climb to the top, ring the bell and win both glory and a prize. It is a short ladder. So it shouldn’t be too difficult, right? WRONG! This challenge takes great coordination, balance and skill. But it sure is a lot of fun, even if you fail.

The Rogue Blades at the Michigan Renaissance Festival
Thursday, August 23rd, 2007Throughout the fifteen acre village are a smattering of fun, interactive and hilarious plays. We wouldn’t recommend bringing your children to the Dead Bob Show. But if you don’t have your kiddies in tow, and you don’t mind some adult oriented comedy, catch the Dead Bob show if you can. In the years that we have been going to the Renaissance Festival, this has been a standing room only show.
To give you a flavor of the atmosphere around these various plays and shows, we’d like to present a short, two minute video clip of The Rogue Blades. Click on the picture below a couple of times to get the video started. Enjoy!
2007 Michigan Renaissance Festival
Tuesday, August 21st, 2007
It is that time of year. Time to teleport back to the 16th century with a short drive to Holly, Michigan. The Renaissance Festival is being held every weekend through the end of September. Grab a turkey leg, a tall glass of ale and enjoy the shows.
The Michigan Renaissance Festival is located on Dixie Highway between Pontiac and Flint, not far from the Grand Blanc exit 106 off of I-75. Parking is FREE!
Ticket prices: $17.95 for adults, $8.95 for children 5-12 and you can bring children ages 4 and younger in for FREE! Discount tickets are available at Kroger’s, Wendy’s and ClicknPrint (we used to get ours at VG’s and we’re not sure why they may not be offering this service any longer. And of course, the Wendy’s in Fenton closed down the beginning of this year).
Here is the official web site for the Michigan Renaissance Festival … click here.
And they may offer discount tickets on their site as well.
The festival is bustling with activity all throughout the 15-acre village. 195 merchants can be found selling authentic renaissance period merchandise. Feel free to dress up in period clothing yourself as audience participation is encouraged.
If you’ve never been to the Renaissance Festival, it really is a once per year treat. Here’s an excellent five minute video presentation we found posted at YouTube which really captures a glimpse of the experience. Enjoy!
