There will be a short presentation in WaterWorks Park, 602 Broad Street in Holly, at 1:00 pm.
about the Top of the Shiawassee Heritage Water Trail.
Participants will start from there at 1:15 pm and be off the river by 5pm.
The route is seven scenic miles from Holly to Fenton, which takes from 2 to 4 hours
depending on paddling speed.

Heavner Canoe Rental is providing canoes and kayaks for rent on site at approximately $40 apiece.
People who want to rent should make an advance reservation by calling 248-685-2379
and find out the exact price at that time.

Headwaters Trails will be providing return transportation
from Strom Park in Fenton back to WaterWorks Park.
People who bring their own craft are asked to make a
$5 contribution to that service; for others, transport is included in the price of renting.

The river is high at this time and clear of obstacles, so passage over beaver dams
and around tight corners should be fairly easy.

The event will take place even if the day is cloudy,
so participants should dress for the weather.

In the event of thunderstorms, we will, of course, cancel as the
final mile across the open Fenton Millpond could be dangerous.
However, the crisp air and the sight of fall foliage along the way make
this one last treat before the winter season sets in.

Come join us for “Canoeing in Color.”

Headwaters Trails, Inc. is Hosting the event.

A review by Doug Lanyk from HeadWatersTrails August 14th, 2008

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

My how things change.
Jimmy and I Took a trip yesterday evening from
Holly’s Waterworks Park to Bush Park in Fenton.
My expectations were slightly low water and an easy paddle.
So much for my powers of precognition.
The water level at waterworks park was about 3 inches higher
than I would have thought. The recent rainfall that missed
my house must have hit somewhere else in the headwaters region.

It was a good start to the journey. The river was quiet
and the wildlife was repeatedly surprised by us quietly
gliding down the river. Numerous deer, fish, turtles,
and heron were motivated to seek further cover upon
being observed at close quarters.
There is a tree partially blocking the river just after
the 3 tubes. You can still paddle around on the the shallow side.
It’s small and will be easily removed, but beware if you try it,
it’s covered in poison ivy. The quiet paddle was just about
perfect until another downed tree just before Fish Lake Rd.
Last week Jimmy had to portage the tree. Last night we had enough
water to bump over it. Once again it was smooth sailing.

The next item of note was the water level in Haddon pond.
It was noticeably lower. The beaver created marsh following the
pond had lot’s of fresh bank showing and a bit of challenging
paddling to go around trees we are accustomed to going over.
The reason for the low water level was soon apparent.
The big beaver dam is gone! I don’t know if it had help
but the center of the old dam is now completely washed out.
No drop whatsoever. This has aesthetic ramifications.
The old dump that comes up to the river at that point
is now showing a whole lot of garbage.

Some new work near Scarbury’s Ford was noticed too.
The ford itself had low water and we had to bump our way across.
The last beaver dam before the Fenton Millpond has been beefed up.
It’s now bigger and badder than ever before.
It’s about a one foot drop that we skated over.
The millpond itself was a pungent mess. It is severely grown over.
It was a bit of work to get the boats across.
After dumping our first load of picked up garbage off at
Strom park we were rewarded for our work by finding a
blue grass band playing at the bandstand in Downtown Dibbleville.

As we portaged the dam, lot’s of curious people questioned us
about paddling on the river. It was a good opportunity for
educating more people about our efforts. Below the dam
we launched Jimmy in his canoe just before I did a seal launch
off of the rocks. It was fun when the the crowd listening to the
band brokeout in applause and cheers in the middle of a song.

From the Dam to Bush Park was a bigger challenge than the millpond.
The water had disapeared. It was very shallow for most of the rest
of the trip. Where we did the cleanup a couple of weeks ago it was
hard to tell we had been there.
The trees that were totally submerged when we cut those above are
now completely above the water. More garbage has been exposed too.
By this time it was getting dark and we were glad that my truck was
right there. A longer trip would have been less than fun.

Get outside.
Doug.

Watch Some Cosmic Bowling at Holly Lanes

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

With the nice weather moving into Fenton, this may not be peak bowling season. That being said, just a short jaunt up the street to Holly, one can enjoy some visually trippy Cosmic Bowling at Holly Lanes on Grange Hall Road. We saw a quick feel good piece on the television today about an eighty something year old with macular degeneration who recently bowled a perfect game of 300. And that reminded us that besides Fenton Lanes on Thompson Road, our neighboring town of Holly has some good bowling available.  If you want to see what this might look like, here’s a short clip from someone on YouTube:

What is Extreme Athletic Training?

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

Extreme Athletic Training in Fenton
Extreme Athletic training is about closing the gap between average results and extraordinary results. Developing and building a body that is not only aesthetic but extremely athletic as well.

I am sure some of you reading this are saying “I don’t care about being functional or being able to leap over tall buildings in a single bound”. But what if I were to tell you there is a training tool that would give you the “look” you want but also give you a body that is performance charged – strong, energetic, flexible and athletic – without any extra time/stuff added? Actually, it would reduce the time you spend in the gym and trust me on this one – there is a unique confidence that comes with having a physique that not only looks good but is capable.

Interested? I was and that is exactly the reason I started Kettlebell training. I have been involved in the martial arts and various athletics for 22 years. I have always been on the look out for something that would make me punch/kick harder, last longer and be more athletic. Kettlebells provided the answer.

Extreme Athletic training is about closing the gap between average results and extraordinary results. Developing and building a body that is not only aesthetic but extremely athletic as well.

The exercises you do with a Kettlebell are full body movements and thus provide all around conditioning. That is why you spend less time in the gym. You can work your entire body with k-bell exercises in 20-40 min or you can spend hours in the gym trying to work each individual muscle group in isolation. Furthermore, think about it, in what real world situation or athletic activity do your individual muscle groups work in isolation?

In addition to shortening your time in the gym and requiring your body to work as a unit, Kettlebell exercises also require you to balance yourself without the assistance of typical gym machines that do it for you. The benefit – your body becomes “intelligent/connected” and more resistant to injury.

Still not sold? Okay, full body exercises have been shown over and over to burn more fat and build more muscle than any isolation movement in existence. So again, you can have the body you want and have the performance enhancement as a nice benefit in the background.

I look forward to training with you!!

All the best,
Ken Blackburn

Hollywood Story from Fenton Football

From Fenton High School Football Coach
To anyone that will listen I would like to take a minute of your time.
Last night, at the Fenton vs Ortinville Brandon football game I may have
witnesses one the greatest moments of all time in my history of watching
sports.
With the game all but over with the score 38-14 Fenton leading and
having the ball on their own 30 yard line with 1:14 to go, we
substituted in Johnathan Fitzgerald to the running back spot to carry
the ball. His first run was a loss of 2 yards and his second run was a
gain of 1. Johnathan you see suffers from Down Syndrome. He is at
every practice, and he is at every game. He works hard and we usually
put him in on a kick off team late in a game, or every now and then we
put him on the defense at safety where we know that he isn’t really in a
lot of danger of being hurt. All week long this week though, he wanted
to be a running back and rep at that spot…so we let him. What a huge
moment for a kid that was with us all summer long at every camp. With
10 seconds remaining we were content with just letting the clock run
out, and satisfied with the effort that our kids had given, when the
Ortonville Brandon Coach called time-out. He apparently was talking
with our chain gang on the sideline asking what was wrong with number 7?
Was he new and didn’t know the plays or what was the story? They
informed him that Johnathan has Down Syndrome. He then told the
officials “that if that kid has the guts to play, then he deserves to
score.” So he instructed his team to make it look like a real play just
don’t tackle him. So our boys lined up one more time with 10 seconds
remaining and we handed it to Johnathan…he hesitated, made a stutter
step through the hole and took off down the sidelines amid a wall of
blockers…The Ortonville players made it look absolutely great, as Fitz
raced down the sideline (we were praying from the booth he didn’t step
out) 68 yards for a touchdown. There he was met by the entire team,
cheerleaders, and coaches. After shaking hands with the opposing team,
Fitz was hoisted at midfield by his teammates and carried to the
endzone.
You here about things like this on ESPN or in the papers every now and
again, but to see it in person was probably the greatest moment in my
sporting career, as a player, coach, or fan.
I guess more than anything I would like to say that if you know anyone
that teaches, coaches, works, or is associated with Ortonville Brandon’s
School system, make sure you mention what a class act that their
players, coaches and fans are.
Thanks,
Brandon C Chapman

GOLF OUTING TO BENEFIT RIGHT TO LIFE

Monday, August 14th, 2006

Golf enthusiasts will have the opportunity to have some fun while supporting a good cause at the same time this upcoming Labor Day. The Freedom Center Church will be hosting a golf outing to benefit The Fenton Area Right to Life Organization on Monday September 4th at one of Michigan’s top ten public courses, the Coyote Preserve Golf Club of Fenton. The day will be packed with various chances to win prizes, a continental breakfast, lunch at the turn, dinner and an awards banquet. Golfers will be playing 18 holes in the 4 person scramble format, with singles, twosomes and threesomes placed into 4 person teams. The $500 donation for a foursome or a $125 donation for an individual will include use of a cart, the open driving range from 7:30 a.m. - 8:45 a.m., a gift package and a ticket for a door prize drawing as well as the meals mentioned. The organizers of the event stated that they wanted to make sure that participants felt like they were getting a good value for their donation and have secured prizes for several contests including longest drive and closest to the pin for both men and women in addition to the 1st, 2nd & 3rd place prizes. If anyone is lucky enough to get a hole-in-one, Hartland Insurance has sponsored a $10,000 prize.
The idea for the event was presented to the church by Court Downs as a fellowship opportunity. Church administrator, Jeff Waltz suggested using it as a fund raiser for The Fenton Area Right to Life Organization. A committee was formed to organize the event that included Jeff Waltz, Court Downs, Tom Houle and George Hameline. The Freedom Center Church enjoys and embraces community involvement so this was a welcomed opportunity.
Fenton Right to Life is a local independent entity that governs its’ own funds to the particular needs of the surrounding community supporting many of the areas crisis pregnancy centers. The primary interest of the organization is to protect the precious gift of human life from the time of conception until natural death with a focus on educating the public on issues such as abortion and euthanasia. Fenton Right to Life has been serving women since 1984. Waltz stated that, “Right to Life aids young ladies during crisis pregnancies by supplying them with the tools and character they will need for their journey into motherhood and this is a cause The Freedom Center feels compelled to support”.
This is just one of many outreach efforts the church has taken on in the past year. “This is the first time we’ve done a golf outing, the response has been great and we hope to make this an annual event”, Waltz added. The sign up deadline for the golf outing is August 22nd. Business sponsors for the event include WSNL 600 Christian Talk Radio, Statewide Stone Fireplaces and Chimneys, Maximum Data Solutions, P&D Fertilizing, Aretha & Associates Insurance and Hartland Insurance. Sponsorships for holes, tees, towels, driving range, greens, carts and dinner are still available. For more information regarding the golf outing, sponsorship or to register contact Court Downs at (810) 599-4184 or e-mail cedowns59@hotmail.com.
