Fenton Tornado: Special "Streets of Fenton" Video Tour – Dibbleville Tornado

Monday, August 27th, 2007

This is the first footage we took right after the storm and tornadoes blew through town. Many of the downed power lines were already being sectioned off and traffic being re-routed, however we somehow managed to work our way northbound through Dibbleville into downtown Fenton, Michigan. We started to catch quick video clips here and there when the magnitude of the devastation started to become apparent.

This two minute and ten second video is a clip montage of the first part of the aftermath of the Fenton tornadoes of 2007. This footage was taken roughly after 6:00 p.m. on the evening of August 24, 2007.

The Sounds of Chainsaws After Tornado Hits

Sunday, August 26th, 2007

On August 24th, 2007 the small town of Fenton, MI was pummelled by a tornado. Some residents near the north end of town kept power, however much of Fenton spent the first and most of the second nights in darkness. No major injuries have been reported thus far, which is amazing. Especially given the extensive property damage taken from falling trees and power lines. Here is some video footage of the damage:

Water Reduction Request from Fenton

Saturday, August 4th, 2007

[This water usage update and request was provided by the City of Fenton]

The City of Fenton Water Plant is operating at or above maximum capacity due to the hot, dry weather conditions and equipment maintenance. We are asking residents to reduce their use of water, from the city water supply system, for irrigation and other outdoor uses, between the hours of 6:00 A.M. and 6:00 P.M., until this situation improves. We regret any inconvenience this may cause and will notify residents when normal operations may resume.

Good Morning Fenton – Good Morning America

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

Yesterday morning a crowd gathered in front of The State Bank in downtown Fenton, Michigan. No, this wasn’t a rally to protest against the high water rates and the brown lawns. Instead it was the second year that Fenton has had the opportunity to say, “Join us for the Taste of Fenton. Good morning, America!”

That’s right! During the week of August 6, 2007 the segment will run locally on “Good Morning America.” What a great way to promote The Taste of Fenton coming up just around the corner.

WJRT (Channel 12) was on location at the State Bank at 9:30 AM on August 1st to film this segment. A roving ace reporter from FentonSays.com just so happened to be driving by. Thanks for the photo!

Virtual Drive East on Silver Lake Road, thru Main and onto Grange Hall Rd in Fenton, Michigan

Monday, July 30th, 2007

Welcome to Part Six of our video tour “Streets of Fenton.” In this segment we will start driving from about where the exit is onto Silver Lake Road from US-23 and head east until the stretch of road turns into Grange Hall Road. Put your sunglasses on and enjoy the ride as we head into the late morning sunrise in Fenton, Michigan.

Travel past the Tim Horton’s across the street from Cafe Aroma and Cottage Inn Pizza. Then enjoy the snake turns near where Republic bank used to be and where The State Bank still is. If you look quickly and closely, you’ll catch a glimpse of the old grain elevator near the railroad tracks.

This is the way one would go from downtown Fenton to Holly, Michigan. You can even pick up I-75 if you continue east bound along this stretch.

Virtual Drive West on North Road and North on Torrey Road in Fenton, Michigan

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

We start this leg of our video tour just east of North Road Elementary School at the corner of North Road and North Adelaide heading west. We’re now into Part Five of the “Streets of Fenton” video series.

Once we reach MoDoggie’s Bar & Grill, we turn right and head north on a long stretch of road paralleling US-23 called Torrey Road. Not far is Georgetown Apartments on the right hand side.

There are a lot of relatively new businesses along this road, and many businesses that have been around Fenton quite a long time, like the Fenton Salvage Yard and Image Projections. Just think, on one street you can pick up a used Chevy carburetor and get a professionally printed “for sale” sign so you can get top dollar selling your extra used car.

One of my favorite parts of this road is “Deadman’s Curve” around a cove in Lake Fenton. We call it “Deadman’s Curve” for obvious reasons … it really can be a dangerous stretch of road. Beautiful, but potentially dangerous.

We don’t make it quite to Fenton Farm’s Golf Course (a wonderful and friendly golf operation on the north side of Fenton) before we hit the orange barrels of construction. And that’s where Part Five of our Fenton tour ends. Enjoy!

Virtual Drive North on Silver Lake Parkway in Fenton

Sunday, July 22nd, 2007

This is an exciting stretch of road. Yes, I’m going to sound like an old person for a second … this was almost completely just a field when I was growing up in Fenton. There, I’ve said it.

Now, Silver Lake Parkway is one of the most bustling commerce areas in Fenton. The beginning stretch of this video below actually starts on Owen Road in front of Fenton High School. This is the area we refer to as “Fast Food Alley.” There are now too many businesses along this stretch of road to name them all … but maybe I’ll try to name just a few.

I’m not going to even attempt to list all of the banks and credit unions now located in this part of Fenton … those living here know how many there are, and the number may suprise those who reside elsewhere. It’s a lot.

The original VG’s in Fenton used to be located about where this video tour starts, but is now located on the east side of Silver Lake Parkway. Gas stations abound near this convenient entrance/exit point for US-23. Walmart, Little Professor Bookstore, the UPS Store, another car dealership, EB Games, Applebee’s, Michael’s, Dairy Queen, Buffalo Wild Wings, Home Depot, Blockbuster, Hollywood Video, Classic Pizza, K-mart and Glicks. If you have other favorite vendors on this segment of Fenton, please feel free to mention them in the comments section of this article.

This is part four of the “Streets of Fenton” video tour available exclusively on FentonSays.com. The previous three segments include:

North on Adelaide West on Silver Lake Road
South on Leroy Street
West on Shiawassee

Virtual Drive Westbound on Shiawassee Avenue in Fenton, MI

Wednesday, July 18th, 2007

Our journey through the main streets of Fenton, Michigan continues. From the heart of Dibbleville to the Fenton Highschool campus, this two and one half minute drive is another trip down memory lane.

This footage was shot on July 17, 2007, days after the stretch of Leroy Street in Fenton was captured for the FentonSays.com reader base. The sunshine turns to rain as we hang a right hand turn at the three way stop just outside of Sweet Variations in Dibbleville.

Past the French Laundry and the park, we want to stop at the Penalty Box for a bite and a beer but we continue on through passing several car lots. We’re reminded that Wendy’s closed without warning about last Christmas time. And before we reach the stretch of road housing many fast food joints, our journey ends. Stay tuned for further adventures through the streets of Fenton, Michigan.

Garden Party for Cultural Center Huge Success

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

Ricky Nelson, back in 1972, sung a smash hit called “Garden Party.” In the catchy tune, Ricky sings about being booed off stage at Madison Square Garden and concludes that “you can’t please everyone, so you’ve got to please yourself.”

Besides the title and both being smash hits, that is where the similarities between the Ricky Nelson song and the fabulous fund raiser end. This Garden Party, organized to help raise money for the construction of the Fenton Cultural Center, was a sold out show. Over 120 people attended in addition to the line up of local speakers.

This event, held at the Fenton Community Center auditorium on June 24th in the early afternoon, featured speakers from The French Laundry, Gerych’s, Cathy Vrh, Fenton Flowers & Gifts and Yard ‘N Garden. Master of Ceremonies, Kathy Williams, did a wonderful job. The luncheon served included a delightful garden salad cleverly served in clay pots with raffia ribbon, and an assortment of dressings presented in decorative watering cans.

A good time … a good cause … and maybe Ricky was wrong … maybe you can please everyone.

Fenton, Michigan Goals For Fiscal Year 2008

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

This is a pretty interesting read. You can see what the stated goals and objectives are in 2008 for the City Manager, Assistant City Manager, City Treasurer, the Police Department, the Public Works Department, the Building and Zoning Department, the Fire Department, City Assessor, and Economic Development.

Download your own copy of the Memorandum from City Manager Mike Senyko.

The City of Fenton should have a website soon. By the sounds the memo, the City of Fenton should be able to get an operational website for under $20,000. I would think so, too.

Times are tougher for us Michiganders, but wouldn’t it be nice to get renovations with costs exceeding $100,000 this year alone? I think my home could be spruced up a little bit, but we really don’t have the money to do many of the projects we would like to do. Especially considering how much we are spending on the water bills in Fenton after two huge rate hikes. But that’s what the City of Fenton is going to do with significant renovations to our City Hall.

Speaking about rising water bills, this quote is interesting … “As directed by Council, we applied for and received funding on multi-million dollar water and sewer projects. As a result, we will need to increase water and sewer rates by a minimum of $18 per quarter while commencing design with our new engineering firm. The projects are slated to begin in the fall of 2007.” SERIOUSLY ?!?! The other two rate hikes didn’t generate enough revenue? Weren’t we told before the new treatment plan went in that these projects were not anticipated to raise our rates?!?!

But hey, we may get new Christmas lights. So we’ve got that to look forward to. Which is nice.
