There will be a short presentation in WaterWorks Park, 602 Broad Street in Holly, at 1:00 pm.
about the Top of the Shiawassee Heritage Water Trail.
Participants will start from there at 1:15 pm and be off the river by 5pm.
The route is seven scenic miles from Holly to Fenton, which takes from 2 to 4 hours
depending on paddling speed.

Heavner Canoe Rental is providing canoes and kayaks for rent on site at approximately $40 apiece.
People who want to rent should make an advance reservation by calling 248-685-2379
and find out the exact price at that time.

Headwaters Trails will be providing return transportation
from Strom Park in Fenton back to WaterWorks Park.
People who bring their own craft are asked to make a
$5 contribution to that service; for others, transport is included in the price of renting.

The river is high at this time and clear of obstacles, so passage over beaver dams
and around tight corners should be fairly easy.

The event will take place even if the day is cloudy,
so participants should dress for the weather.

In the event of thunderstorms, we will, of course, cancel as the
final mile across the open Fenton Millpond could be dangerous.
However, the crisp air and the sight of fall foliage along the way make
this one last treat before the winter season sets in.

Come join us for “Canoeing in Color.”

Headwaters Trails, Inc. is Hosting the event.

Fenton Toastmasters Hold Two Contests, Winners Advancing

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Fenton, MI (9/20/08) – In place of its usual meeting, the morning of Friday, September 19th, local public speaking group Fenton Area Toastmasters held two contests: one for planned humorous speeches and the other for short, impromptu speeches known as “table topics.” First place winners were John Strayer and Stacy Lukasavitz, respectively, both of whom are now eligible to compete against the best speakers of ten local clubs at the area contest, which will be held at Baker College in Flint on Saturday, September 27th.

Strayer, winner of the Humorous Speech contest, gave a hilarious oration on how he handled the death of a former roommate’s cat. The Humorous Speech contest consists of planned, 5-7 minute speeches by members and can be about any topic as long as it is original material. Speeches must be thematic in nature (opening, body, close) and not a standup act or monologue (series of one-liners). However, because of a scheduling conflict, Strayer is unable to attend the area competition, so runner-up David Broadworth will go in his place.

Lukasavitz took top honors in the Table Topics contest, an impromptu form of speaking where each contestant has between one and two minutes to answer a question. Each contestant was asked the following question: “Which event in your life has had the most impact on how you view the world?” Lukasavitz extemporaneously expounded on her belief that one’s worldview is not fixed, it is constantly changing as things happen to us, whether we realize it or not.

Toastmasters International is a worldwide, nonprofit organization. The Fenton Area Toastmasters meets weekly on Friday mornings from 7:45-8:45 in the lower level of the State Bank (Main Branch) at 175 N. Leroy Street in Downtown Fenton. Guests are always welcome and are strongly encouraged to attend. For more information, call Stacy Lukasavitz at (810) 599-4813, or visit www.fentontoastmasters.org.

Fenton Toastmasters To Hold Humorous Speech Contest

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

PUBLIC INVITED TO ATTEND

Fenton, MI (9/16/08) – Local public speaking club Fenton Area Toastmasters cordially invites members of the community to a special event this Friday, September 19th, where they will be holding two speech contests at their usual meeting place in the lower level of The State Bank (main branch) in Downtown Fenton. Members of the club will be competing against each other in planned humorous speeches and impromptu “Table Topics,” all in the name of good fun and competition. This special event starts promptly at 7:30 a.m. and will go until 9:00 a.m.

The Humorous Speech contest consists of planned, 5-7 minute speeches by members and can be about any topic as long as it is original material. Speeches must be thematic in nature (opening, body, close) and not a standup act or monologue (series of one-liners).

The Table Topics competition is a based on impromptu speaking, where members have 1-2 minutes to think on their feet and speak about the chosen topic. Unlike at Toastmasters meetings, each contestant is escorted out of the room and are individually brought back in to speak on the same general topic.

All contestants are judged based on criteria such as speech development, effectiveness, audience response, originality, body language, grammar, and appropriateness, among others. One winner of each contest in the club will be chosen to compete at the local competition, which will be held at Baker College on Saturday, September 27th.
